China Year of the Horse

Guest Feature – Destination Asia – China

Based on the lunar calendar, Chinese New Year is the most important festival in China and has been celebrated for over 2,000 years.

Chinese families get together for a new year feast, dress in red clothing, and adorn their houses with red banners and decorations. Ornate red envelopes called hong bao are filled with money and given to children to wish them luck and happiness.

Traditionally new year firecrackers were lit to scare off a monster called nian, but nowadays setting off firecrakers and fireworks is a tradition in itself.

Perhaps the most famous aspect of Chinese New Year in the West are the twelve animals of the “Chinese Zodiac”.

Each cycle of 12 years is represented by an animal and 2014 is the Year of the Horse. Those born this year are said to be energetic, passionate and intelligent.

As Chinese New Year ushers in the spring, this is one of the best times to visit, as much of the country is at its loveliest.

The Rolling Stones are scheduled to perform in Shanghai in March and the F1 Grand Prix rolls into town in April.
